Jemison sidewalk project taking shape

Published Thursday, July 2, 2009

The city of Jemison’s new sidewalks are about 33 percent complete, estimated Mayor Eddie Reed.

Jemison’s sidewalks will run from Jemison High down to the intersection of Highways 31 and 191 and across to the railroad tracks.

Jemison’s sidewalks will run from Jemison High down to the intersection of Highways 31 and 191 and across to the railroad tracks.

The sidewalks are built differently than most, the mayor pointed out, because they are located a few feet off the highway. This is intended to provide more safety for pedestrians.

“When you look at most sidewalks, they are built right along with the curb of the highway,” Reed said. “Our city’s traffic has more than tripled in the past few years, and these sidewalks will be a welcome sight to pedestrians walking within the city.”

The project, funded by a $245,000 Federal Highway Administration grant through the state, was contracted out for 90 days. The city provided just over $60,000 in matching funds.

“We’re looking forward to the beautification and safety these sidewalks will provide for our citizens,” Reed said.

Another major project is in the works at I-65 Exit 219, where poles are being installed for new lighting.

The city hopes the lighting will attract new business to the east side of town.

“We’re excited about all the progress we’re seeing right now,” Reed said.

“When you look at most sidewalks, they are built right along with the curve of the highway,”……”Curve” or “Curb”….or did Mr. Reed actually spell out c-u-r-v-e?

G, you're being picky now. Curb is correct. However, the wording used to express the intended idea was poor. The curb is a baseline used in many measurements, especially when placing certain included permanent marks such as light bases utility access boxes etc...which are surveyed and then used as an elevation base, depending on the particular situation. I do believe he is incorrect in stating most sidewalks are built right up to the curb. That depends on the location. I have seen them in different communities with a buffer area that is filled with many materials such as sand, rocks, grass, and plain old dirt. I can picture this project in 3 years, littered with Jack's, McDonalds, Subway and Hardee's trash. (OOPS! Forgot, there is no Hardee's in Chilton County.) Some weeds may exist, and the sod will have died, leaving Bahaia grass and cigarette butt bulbs that multiply, but never grow in cigarettes. You can put a dress on a pig, but it's still a pig.

Graves: I take offense to your comment, "You can put a dress on a pig, but it's still a pig." I agree Jemison is not a pretty town because all the businesses have been built over many years and are individually owned; therefore, the town can not force owners to beautify their buildings. However, the town of Jemison works very hard to keep it clean and make improvement whenever possible. Maybe it isn't Jemison that's the pig.....

Chilly, I did NOT mean to offend you. I just call it like I see it. Asthetically, (spelling may be wrong) Jemison is just plain ugly. Butler buildings surrounded by Porter's junkyards. The town council could do something about that. But, old wrecked cars, metal sided buildings and a McDonald's doesn't make it a pretty town. Go out 42 east and you have junk motorhomes. Go north on 31 and you have auto repair/junkyards. Go south on 31 you have a Subway sandwich shop next to an auto repair/junkyard. The town looks like a pig stigh. Thorsby looks better than Jemison. If you were offended, welcome to the United States of the Offended. And as the Eagles song is titled, "Get Over It!"

I can recall, years ago, businesses advertising their location as "On the curve in Homewood." Was it an actual "curve" in Homewood or was it the "curb" in Homewood? I haven't heard that expression used in years and was told a while ago that Homewood actually straightened the infamous "curve" but could never confirm that.

Clearly Mayor Eddie meant "curb" meaning you build the curb, a slight embankment of concrete, you pour the sidewalk to go along with it.

Graves....you never mean to offend anyone, but you always do. Apparently, the Advertiser's comments section was created just for you to grace us with your opinions on every article...every stinkin' day. News flash! Not everyone cares what you think. But since you have the answer to all of Chilton County's problems, especially Jemison's, please move here and run for Mayor. Oh, wait....you can't. It'd be a tremendous cut in pay. I know this because you NEVER (ooohhh....I yelled in all caps), EVER fail to brag about your beautiful home, large salary, and challenging job that no one in the world can do but you.

I wish it were not true, but Jemison downtown is kinda ugly. But we love our town and our mayor and city council. They have made many improvements and I think we're headed in the right direction.
