Mims: County money to be tight
Published Friday, January 9, 2009
Chilton County Commission chairman Tim Mims says county leaders will have to keep a close check on all spending this year, even if it means going into emergency spending early in the year.
“That’s something we’ve more or less been a little bit slack on,” Mims said, adding that he does not want citizens to be alarmed.
The commission started the 2008-09 fiscal year with a conservative budget that included cuts for many agencies that typically receive funding from the commission.
Mims said he hopes that when the fiscal year draws to a close, they will not have to borrow as much money as in recent years.
“Right now, money’s coming in good, but we’ve got to make that stretch out,” he explained.
But if he sees the need to go into emergency spending early, he will ask support from his fellow commissioners.
Emergency spending basically means that before department heads spend any large amounts of money, even if the amount already exists within their department’s budget, they must first get an OK from the commission.
“I expect each department head to stay within their budget,” Mims added.
He asks citizens to keep county leaders in their thoughts and prayers as they make decisions this year.

Why does a comment section get disabled? Maybe someone can explain this to me.Is it because the comments can be very truthful sometimes and it offends the someone?

Well Steven, it appears that the fear of intimidation was just more than the paper could handle. Or maybe their buddies' toes were getting stepped on. They've disabled the comments section on the story about the judges. I'd hate to live my life ruled by fear.

The newspaper has to protect itself against possible slanderous or libelous comments y'all.

Brent: What books do you keep on either side of your copy of "The Communist Manifesto"? Just curious.
Dodging uncomfortable comments about prominent people by invoking "terms of use" is pretty whimpy, with all due respect. If the same comments had been made about John Q. Citizen I'll bet that you wouldn't have batted your eye. Could be wrong, wouldn't be the first time.

kw and I are liable to be sent to the big politically correct dungeon in the sky at any moment. I'm sure that some can hardly wait. :) We'll come back in another life though.

Sure makes you wonder, doesn't it? Hopefully it was just a case of having the caution light turned up too bright.
The issue that you raised was brought up in a conversation that I had with someone several months ago, but I had forgotten about it. A little investigative journalism might be in order here so that the citizens can be kept abreast of what is, or is not, really going on. Sometimes you have to go find the news, instead of waiting for it to find you.
