Twister downs trees, power lines in Shelby County

Published Friday, February 27, 2009

CHELSEA (AP) — A tornado moving through Birmingham's southern suburbs has downed power lines and trees and caused minor damage in Chelsea.

No injuries were reported in the storm, which the National Weather Service reported as a line of strong storms and heavy rain moved through Alabama on Friday.

Meteorologists in Huntsville said up to 2 inches of rain is expected across the Tennessee Valley region over the weekend. Rainfall will also be heavy across central and southern counties.

The National Weather Service office in Birmingham has issued a flash flood watch for dozens of counties from 3 p.m. Friday through late tonight. There's a possibility of light snow in some areas by Sunday as temperatures fall.
