Commissioner Heedy Hayes grows row crops at his home.

Heedy Hayes is a commissioner, but he represents Chilton County in more ways than one.

Like many of the people he works for, Hayes is agriculturally inclined. Hayes grows mainly corn, tomatoes and watermelons on some land near his home on County Road 73.

Hayes has been a resident since 1951. He’s also a family man: he and his wife, Martha, have been married for 49 years and have a daughter and two grandchildren.

Also like most Chilton County residents, politics wasn’t Hayes’ first idea as a way to spend his life.

“When I was younger, I never dreamed of [holding public office],” Hayes said. “I just saw some things I thought I could help the county with.”

Hayes was first elected in 1991 and has been a commissioner ever since. And, he’s learned to enjoy the job.

“You have to stay in it this long,” Hayes said.
