An earthquake measuring 2.2 on the Richter scale occurred about 11 miles west of Maplesville early yesterday morning.
No damage was reported as a result of the earthquake, which the U.S. Geological Survey recorded at 2:14 a.m. An earthquake of such a slight magnitude is generally not felt by the public, but is recorded by seismic instruments. The actual location of the earthquake was in a rural area, 32.805°N, 87.069°W, according to the USGS Earthquake Center.
Dr. Lorraine Wolf, professor of geophysics at Auburn University, said earthquakes of such light magnitude are not uncommon. "That part of Alabama has a lot of very ancient, non-active faults," she said.
Wolf said the earthquake could have resulted from falling rocks in an old abandoned coalmine or by someone injecting fluids into the ground.
Maplesville Town Clerk Shelia Haigler said yesterday afternoon that no one she has talked with reported feeling the quake yesterday morning.
While earthquakes in Alabama are rare, they happen. The first one of significance was recorded Feb. 4, 1886, in Sumter and Marengo counties. A similar event occurred nine days later and again felt by people who lived along the Tombigbee River in the western part of the state.
In 1916, a strong earthquake was reported east of Birmingham. Its strongest point was at Easonville. People reported broken windows and damaged frame buildings. Some chimneys were knocked down.
Birmingham was the site of another earthquake in April 1957, which alarmed many people, cracked cement steps, damaged chimneys and cracked some walls.
Two years later, an earthquake centered near Huntsville, shook bricks from chimneys and some buildings in the area.
Wolf mentioned an earthquake that occurred in 1997 near Brewton and was felt as far north as Demopolis and as far west as Gulfport, Miss.

I remember the one 4 or 5 years ago (it may have been longer) very well. I live in an older house that has counter weights hanging in the walls that are attached to the windows to make them easier to open and close. The noise of these weights hitting the walls woke me up . I stood up and felt the whole house shake. In about 2 seconds it was over.
That is a very strange feeling. I will never forget it.

By the way, most people do not have home owners insurance that would cover any damage caused by an earthquake, but you can add it for very little cost. Most people shop on price, so it is not part of standard package. I added it years ago.

Actually (I wasn't suppose to divulge this info), the earthquake was actually some gaseous remnants of a bbq plate kw had at Tim Mim's place in Maplesville. The paper mill in Selma was blamed for the penetrating vapors.

I remember the tremor that occured 4 are 5 years ago. We did not feel the quake, first we were awakened to our bird going crazy in her cage, we thought the cats had some how gotton to her. When we got to the room she was in, nothing was there. Then we felt the tremor. This was an older home also and it rattled the windows, I knew what it was, but I was more worried about calming Flossie down. I have always heard animals know these things before we do. Sure convinced me. Unfortunatly she passed away in 2007.
