What is this?

New name: Cedar Grove Fire Department, located on Chilton County Road 37, is now an independent station.
Cedar Grove officially a fire dept.
Published Thursday, August 13, 2009
The former Collins Chapel Fire Station No. 2 is now officially known as Cedar Grove Fire Department.
Adam Price, president of the Chilton Firefighters Association and chief of Cedar Grove, said papers were signed last week between the two departments. Starting Thursday, Aug. 13, he added, E-911 dispatchers began acknowledging the change.

Identifying marks: This symbol appears on one of Collins Chapel’s trucks.
“It was the best thing for both communities,” Price said. “We had grown so much, and we just had some differences inside the department.”
What does this mean for residents in the departments’ coverage areas? For the time being, nothing more than a name change.
Collins Chapel Fire Department is located on County Road 29, east of U.S. Highway 31. Its coverage area extends west to the railroad tracks along Highway 31, and east along 29 to near Jemison’s corporate limits. It also includes rural areas north and south of the station.
Cedar Grove is located on County Road 37 near the church of the same name. Its coverage area picks up on the west side of the railroad and runs west, meeting Isabella to the west and Fairview to the south. On the north side, it runs to the Pates Chapel community and near Thorsby.
For now, the ISO rating of both departments will remain the same. The rating is currently 4.
Insurance companies use ISO ratings, which measure a department’s capacity, to determine homeowner insurance premiums. The lower the number, the more favorable the rating.
“Most likely, both departments will have to be re-tested within six months to a year,” Price said.
When asked about the change, Mike Minor, district chief of Collins Chapel Fire Department, echoed Adams’ sentiments.
“It’s what the board of directors said they thought would be best, so that’s what we’re going to do,” Minor said.

I think station #1 was getting all the good stuff and station #2 was getting all the things Mike didn't want.

I am glad to see cedar grove up and running, Its a shame that these 2 departments had to come to this over one person, But maybe it was the best thing so that cedar grove can serve there side of the tracks like they should have been able to all of these years. Congratulations to the leadership and members of cedar grove I know they have worked very hard for this.

THE ONES THAT KNOW WHAT A MESS THE DEPT. WAS IN BECAUSE OF ONE MAN

it seems to me that there would not have been a fire dept over there if it weren't for Mike Minor and the others at Collins Chapel working and raising the money to start with. One man can not "mess up" a fire dept. Who said it was "messed up"?

Things happen, people change sometimes they grow apart. ANY of these members on either side would lay there life on the line for you or someone you love tommorrow. It's a done deal so be proud for both departments as they can now grow into what they want to be. Insurance rates will remain the same for both sides until ISO comes out and retest.
The members of both sides doing fundraisers helped establish the station on County Road 37 with LOADS of help from the taxpayers on that side of the tracks. In return the taxpayers benefited by lower insurance premiums than they had before.
Good Luck Cedar Grove and Good Luck Collins Chapel your all family to me and I wish you all the best.

What is the estimated insurance rating increase once ISO re-test? It is almost certain to go up.
Is this really a service improvement if ALL homeowners are affected that are serviced by these, now, two departments?
Posted by whyintheworld (anonymous) on August 14, 2009 at 2 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Thank you "Thorsby is home"!!!
Mike Minor along with others saw that the "Ceder Grove" community needed fire protection. The station was built. How can anybody fault an individual that started the ball rolling for the community? Before you point a finger at somebody, and make comments about them, you need to take a look at the fingers pointing back at you. This is the individuals that post derogatory commnets that are most at wrong; the real problem lies with you.
May God Bless all the men and women that lay their lives on the line each and everyday for us.
Posted by THORSBYishome (anonymous) on August 14, 2009 at 2:08 p.m. (Suggest removal)
seriously, you cannot estimate the increase because you don't know how either station will come out on the re-test. Nothing is ever certain, Both stations could come out with a ISO rating of 4 or???? who knows less.
Service improvement is doing what is best for all of the communities involved and surrounding. Obviously the boards/stations felt this was the best decision for all parties involved and that includes the homeowners. I'm sure this was a hard decision for everyone and wasn't decided overnight. There's alot of heartbroke people at both stations please keep that in mind and this could happen to ANY department out there.

This is one of the most childish things I have seen in a while. I didn't even have an account util just a few minutes ago. I got on here because someone called me and told me to look at the comments this morning. I don't think no one person is to blame for all of this. It maybe some peoples fault for doing things but it is other peoples fault for not saying anything about it. Everybody in the fire service SHOULD be in it to help people and the communities of Chilton County. If that is not the reson you are in it you need to go home. Think about the time you could have spent at your local fire department today helping if you wouldn't have been sitting in front of the computer writing messages to try to make someone mad. This is a volunteer job and no one gets paid. If you have ideas on how to make your local fire department better show up for a meeting and help them don't fuss about how there doing it. One more thing to think about before I get off of here. Just remember no matter how bad you talk about the fire departments in the county when or if you have to call 911 we want think twice about risking our lives to help you. Think about what we have to deal with and go through for free.

ISO doesn't care about EMTs and medics. ISO cares about firefighters and equipment. It don't matter how you look at it when you take a whole and split it into half each side has less. This is what ISO looks at according to their website.

Everyone can see that you have a very boring life.
I do have a suggestion for you before I go. Maybe you could go to the circus and see if they are hiring. I can tell you need something to do during the day.
Now, I am going to enjoy my weekend and you should try and do the same.
I can't wait to see what you will write about me.

Emts and Medics might not matter to ISO,but if me or my family member is in need of medical care I sure would be glad to see one. I have been in the firefighting business for over a decade it is a lot of commitment for the ones that will go to school for months on end at night to become a certified 160class firefighter and an average of 2 years to become paramedics thats a lot when you arent going to make a dime back in return, It is very impressive to me for a small department like this to have so many dedicated members I called one of cedar groves officers for a run down on personell he stated that at this time they have 32 members of which 4 are medics 3 more are finishing medic school within this year, 6 emt's,5 career fireman and 10 that has been through the firefighter 160 which is the volunteer firefighter certification. When I look at these stats it is is amazing what these men and women have accomplished without expecting anything in return but the self grattitude of knowing they went through all of this to get the training to help their neighbors.

Well, to those of you talking about how many firemen Cedar Grove has, you need to pipe down yet again. Cedar Grove has at least 5-10 certified as Volunteer Firefighters by the 160 hour course. They also have 6 firefighters on roster who are State certified as Career Firefighters. These Career certified count in ISO as three volunteer firefighters each. So they are still covered by the many serving.

After reading 30 something comments I have seen a department split up over jealousy. Seems you all have some serious personal issues. Lots of vicious comments here. Especially from that fool Pateschapel. He sounds like spam sucking trailer trash who is disgusted with his life. Graves sounds like an agitator who enjoys doing a seemingly good job at letting Pateschapel make a fool of himself. Those two have made this fun to read. The others attacking each other and this Mr. Minor sound like childish volunteer firefighters being jealous of each other. Then there are a couple of you all who are making good comments. The good comments and Kwsrgraves humor are the best part of this article's comments.

seriously: you do not know what you are talking about. several years ago when the department became an iso 3 state farm informed me that they did not go by that anymore we were lumped in the Birmingham metro area now and recieved a flat ratebased on the claims recieved from the area

SHAF:
Newsflash: State Farm is not the only provider of homeowner's insurance! Not sure what department covers you but the story says that these departments have an ISO rating of 4.
You might want to check your facts.
There are several insurance companies that still utilize ISO ratings to determine rates.

seriously if you read my post, it said several years ago. this was when they got up and running the dept sent out a letter to all in collins ch.#2 coverage area stating the rating carried this to ins they told me they didnt go by that anymore as for all ins some are different but if you went to Cedar Grove Church they probably would say worse about alfa. insurance companys have many lawyers on staff to make money if there is a way out they will find it.

WOW, this is definitely what is wrong with our world today, adults who have nothing better to do than to bring each other down by hateful comments, can you imagine what our world and community would be like if everyone tried to encourage each other or give a helpful comment when we disagree. I just started reading these comments on here, very disappointing for our county, and if it makes you feel better go ahead and add some comments about this. Hope everyone has a wonderful day.

Congratulations to Cedar Grove! May you only get better. I think all our FD's deserve to be patted on the back. Some are better than others, I know, but they can only work with the ones that join up. I know some people join up to try and look big, or as some kind of status symbol, but most of those people quit early when they realize just how much time, money and dedication it takes. Some attention hogs stick it out, making those around them miserable, but sooner or later they're shaken out. Graves, I don't always get your humor, but you're anything but boring. You do know how to pull people's strings that's for sure. Of course, some are easier than others aren't they? Everyone have a great day! I was able to get a good laugh first thing this morning.

Uh, yeah, there is such a thing as rice paper. Of course you might not know that if you've never been outside Alabama. The Chinese and Japanese have been using it for eons. I suspect that if a poll were taken, you would find that more people than not would prefer that kwsrgraves hang around, if for no other reason than the humor that abounds when he rips the head off of the next unsuspecting fool and spits down the hole. He's hilarious, most of the time, even when he tries (unsuccessfully) to defend obama and the democrat congress. So, 67, sit back, relax, have yourself a cold one, and prepare to have your head handed to you. Have a nice day!
