Martin sentenced

Gene Martin receives over nine years for murder-for-hire

Published Tuesday, April 21, 2009

A United States District Court Judge sentenced Douglas Eugene “Gene” Martin, 54, of Jemison to 9 1/2 years in federal prison after being convicted of murder-for-hire.

U.S. Attorney Leura G. Canary announced the sentencing late Monday in Montgomery.

Martin was also sentenced to serve three years of supervised release under the supervision of a federal probation officer after his release from prison.

At the time Martin took part in the murder-for-hire plot, he was in federal custody pending federal firearms charges. Martin used another inmate to attempt to hire someone to commit a murder in exchange for an offer of money from Martin.

No attempts to murder the intended and unnamed victim were actually made because investigators discovered the murder-for-hire plan before it could be carried out.

“It is fortunate that the investigators in this case successfully protected the victim by exposing this murder-for-hire scheme before it could be executed,” Canary said. “The sentence received by Mr. Martin should signal others who might want to hire people to commit violent crimes that they face stiff punishment in this district.”

The case was investigated as part of the Department of Justice’s Project Safe Neighborhoods and Middle District of Alabama’s Alabama ICE programs, both aimed at preventing violent crime and illegal possession of firearms.

Investigating the case were agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Chilton County Sheriff’s Office and the Jemison Police Department.

Assistant U.S. Attorneys Matthew Shepherd and Nathan Stump prosecuted the case.

So how did Chilton and Jemison help out if it was while he was in "federal custody"? They were gonna get him for something any way he turned... just not drugs or stolen cars!

ARE YOU PEOPLE FOR REAL. WHERE ARE YOU PULLING UP HE HAS PENDING CHARGES? AND IT WASN'T A SHE HE WANTED KILLED! THERE ARE NO, NO,NO PENDING DRUG CHARGES OR TRAFFICKING CHARGES OR RECV. STOLEN PROPERTY.
IF ALL YOU KNEW HALF AS MUCH AS YOU TOLD YOU DID YOU MIGHT BE THE SHERRIFF! AND THAT "PIECE OF TRASH" PROBABLY GAVE ALOT OF YOUR FAMILIES JOBS AND CARS WHEN NO ONE ELSE WOULD. NO ONE FUSSES ABOUT THE REVENUE HE HAS GIVEN JEMISON OR THE COUNTY FOR THE LAST 20 YEARS!
WHO COULD BE SUCH TRASH NOT TO THINK HE SHOULD SEE HIS FAMILY, HIS MOTHER.
GOD BLESS ALL OF THE HIPOCRITICS ON HERE THAT KNOW GENE'S PERSONAL BUSINESS BETTER THAN THEIR OWN. I HOPE YOU ASK FOR FORGIVENESS BEFORE YOU HAVE TO MEET OUR MAKER. IF YOU HAD TO TELL HIS MOM EVERYDAY THAT HE STILL WASN'T COMING HOME AND WATCH HER CRY YOU MIGHT THINK TWICE.
WE ARE ALL PEOPLE IN GOD'S EYES. I HOPE NONE OF YOU LIVE IN A GLASS HOUSE.

Maybe he wont make it the whole time alive living on all of our tax money when He himself never paid any taxes. His so called girlfriend that has another boyfriend does not pay his taxes either. Both pieces of crap in my book. She should be sitting right beside him...almost killing herself trying to swallow drugs before the police found them last year.

I worked for Gene Martin and I personally saw how he treated people who purchased vehicles. One elderly man bought a pick up and before his 1st payment it was broke down several times and was towed in by Gene's wrecker and the elderly gentlemen was charged a Wrecker fee & charged for fixing the pick up. One lady had made all payments except for the last one owed and she had called in to request that she have a little more time to pay and Gene agreed but instead her car was repo'd. I was instructed to take a credit card payment via phone for a guy who wanted a transmission that Gene said he had in the junk yard but when the guy arrived to get the trans they didn't have one and would not give the guy a refund, the guy of course got very upset and Gene had Jemison PD to come and escort him from their property. I walked in on drugs being used..I could go on and on on what I saw in my 1 month of being employed there BUT.... I think that he should have been but back in the pen long before he was.

This man deserves to be in prision. He has been crooked for many years and has done more people harm than good. A big thank you to the police department for taking the "trash" out.

Hey KW - you were in law enforcement----what does bound over grand jury mean? Yet to be heard in court?

14-DC-2007-002237.00 - charge is USE/POSS DRUG PARAPH (misdemeanor charge) indicates "bound over Grand Jury." Not dismissed.

14-DC-2007-002238.00 - charge is POSS CONTR. SUBS. (felony charge) indicates "bound over Grand Jury." Not dismissed.

14-DC-2007-002239.00 charge is TRAFFICKING-METHAMPH (felony charge) indicates "bound over Grand Jury."

14-CC-2009-000160.00 charge is 3 felony counts REC STOLEN PROP 1ST indicates "indicted by Grand Jury 02/06/09 set for arraignment 04/30/09

There are many, many, many more cases listed. Doesn't look like they were dismissed. If I follow correctly, after the arraignment he will be indicted, then prosecuted before a jury?

I'm not a big advocator of anyone going to prison but sometimes what's right is right. If u play u gotta pay eventually. In some cases, like this one, u have to wonder how he kept getting by with what he did, and continued doing, without doing more and harder time than what he has received. I consider him fortunate to only get 9 years and very fortunate it is federal time. What facility will he be at this time, does anyone know yet?
