County tudent accepted into national program

Megan Prentice of Jemison recently was admitted into the 2009 class of the McNair Scholars Program, the national post-baccalaureate achievement program, at the University of Montevallo where she is a biology major.

UM’s McNair Scholars Program, now in its sixth year, is a federally funded academic program, which aims to increase diversity among doctoral degree holders. The program provides students from underrepresented groups throughout the U.S. with the encouragement and preparation needed to successfully complete their postgraduate studies through research and other scholarly activities.

Study club holds September meeting

The Woman’s Study Club of Clanton met on Friday, Sept. 19, at the home of Mrs. Earle Finlayson.

Members were welcomed and invited to enjoy an assortment of salads and deserts. Mrs. Finlayson introduced Mrs. Jo Abernathy with the Clanton Public Library. Mrs. Abernathy gave a program on different ways and areas we can volunteer at the Library. Some of the ways are book donations; memorials; and serving of the board.

Following the program, President Jenny Pitts opened the meeting with the collect. The roll was called and 14 members were in attendance. The minutes from the last meeting were read and approved and the treasurer’s report was given.

The next meeting will be on Oct. 17 at the home of Mrs. Nancy Shannon.

Agent Linda Wilson earns Personal Financial Rep status

Linda Wilson is among an elite group of Allstate insurance agents who recently earned the “Personal Financial Representative” title. She will now be able to provide her customers variable annuity, variable life and mutual fund products, in addition to auto, homeowner and traditional life insurance products.

Wilson received the Personal Financial Representative title after passing the Series 6 and Series 63 securities license exams and completing an extensive Allstate training curriculum. She is appointed with the broker dealer Allstate Financial Services, LLC.

“Planning for the future is just as important as protecting yourself against a loss, which insurance is designed to do,” Wilson says. “Our agency will continue to help people protect their autos, homes, lives and businesses. But now we can offer additional financial services products, like mutual funds, variable annuities and variable universal life insurance to help families plan wisely for the future.”
