Ala. Ag comm. critical of proposed livestock tax

Published Wednesday, November 26, 2008

Alabama agriculture commissioner Ron Sparks says a proposed livestock tax proposed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency should raise alarms.

He said the levy would effectively put livestock farmers out of business by taxing them for supposed greenhouse gas releases by the animals.

The proposed tax would affect any farm with more than 25 dairy cows, 50 beef cattle or 200 hogs. A farmer would pay $175 per dairy cow, $87.50 per beef cow, and $20 for each hog annually.

Sparks serves as president of a national agriculture group and said his organization will submit comments to the EPA opposing the initiative.

He also urged all livestock producers to make a public response by the Nov. 28, 2008 deadline.

Hey ... if the EPA really wants to cash in on greenhouse gas releases, they need to tax themselves, because they are full of it. If these environmental wacko's keep suckin' the life out of the farmer's that feed and clothe us, ... what then? I've been in public places where greenhouse gas releases well surpassed 25 dairy cows. At least the cattle are out on open pasture. What is a healthy burp gonna cost us down the road?

Folks, with taxes such as this, small farmers, like my family, are going to go out of business. The small dairy farmers have already been run out of business by regulations and taxes now only large compaines monopolize this market, chicken farmers are now owned by large companies and those farmers are "employees" of the large owners such as Tyson.

It's hard enough now with cattle prices dropping 2 to 3 cents a pound by the week and feed and fertilizer prices climbing every week. People say "well at least fuel prices have come down" The reality is fuel prices in the summer were 4.00 a gallon for off road, that is when the fuel was being used, not now ( growing season for hay and corn are over ).

I guess I am going to have to teach my cows to have manners build them a gas house. This is SO STUPID!!!!!!!!!!!!

To me this is another step in the governement controlling what people can do.

Welcome to the new liberal view of how American life should be. Republicans are also guilty of this type of asinine stupidity, but we 'ain't seen nothing yet'. But we will, starting in January. When we become dependant on other countries for our food because of this type of stupidity, who will the super power be then?

Well actually I am at the limit (51 as we speak) Maybe I should slaughter 2. All I know is if we end up having to pay 87.50 (?) per head then I might as well get out. It sort of scares me since in my lifetime I have watched chicken farmers and dairy farmers be pushed out. We really just enjoy the work and it helps my dad to stay busy and keep his mind off of his cancer. I have already lost over 15,000 in the past 2 years but this year may help. I just hate to see more taxes put on people who just want raise cattle or anything for the love of it. Sort of like saying we are going to charge X amount of dollars for hunters on top of license because deer, turkey, squirrels, rabbits and doves are putting off emmissions.
I bet when steaks in the grocery store go from 8.00 to 15.00 per pound people will be screaming "This is just not right".

If the greenie weenies at the EPA really wanted to reduce greenhouse gasses, they would dig a hole and get in it and cover themselves up. The really sad thing to me is that many supposedly conservative people have bought in to this Al Gore garbage. Many, many thousands of years ago most of what is now North America was covered in ice. Later on, much of the southeast was covered by ocean water, shark's teeth have been found in Verbena. Was it all of those Wooley Mammoths and dinosaurs processing grass and trees into methane gas that caused the "climate change" back then? Good God. It seems that the more educated people get, the dumber they are. For sure, the less common sense they have. If the greenie weenies are so concerned about the gas that cows are expelling, they should be trying to figure out some way of connecting a system of funnels and hoses to their rear ends and running cars off off the resulting fuel instead of trying to put livestock farmers out of business.

Nov. I like they way you think - Common Sense. I work with some highly intelligent people and some of the off the wall stuff they say just makes me scratch my head. Same situation here, someone knowing more than everyone else.

KW- thanks for your concern about dad. He's doing rather well now but probably not after next week when those dreaded tretments start again.

KW- Sparks is not proposing the tax. The US EPA is. Mr. Sparks is against the tax because he knows it will put a great deal of farmers out of business.
