Alabama Power not planning rate cut like TVA

Published Monday, November 17, 2008

— Alabama Power Co. is not planning to cut electric rates like the Tennessee Valley Authority.

TVA is planning to cut rates about 6 percent on Jan. 1 because of lower fuel costs. The move comes after a 20 percent hike by TVA in October.

A spokesman for Alabama Power says the company won't reduce rates because it is trying to recover about $300 million that has already been spent for fuel to operate its power plants. But spokesman Michael Sznajderman said Alabama Power, which is raising rates about 13 percent, has agreed to go through 2009 without a general rate increase.

TVA serves the northern third of Alabama. Alabama Power serves much of the southern two-thirds of the state.

Did anybody expect them to give us a rate decrease? What they need is some good old fashioned competition, but it ain't gonna happen.

Can anyone explain why Al. Power spends money to tell us how to use less electricity on one hand and then on the other lures people to go all electric and use more electricity by giving you a free electric water heater? And why do they need to advertise in the first place? It's not as if you have a choice where you get your electricity, you have to get it from the company that has power lines in front of your house.

Agreed again. As funny as the birds may be, what is the point? We need electricity, we have to use what is there. What is the point of telling us how much it costs to bake a cake or run the washing machine? Were they trying to get us to use more in hopes of not needing to increase the rates? I doubt it, it was more than likely just a bad idea by someone who was good at convincing the decision makers that was the only way to spend the money, on ridiculous commercials.

Well, I am on Co-opperative power. Kinda ironic, cause Alabama Power is UNION and co-op is not. I am UNION and work for Alabama Power a lot when I am home. Alabama Power, or Southern Co, is doing things that are federally mandate to clean up their act. SCR's and Scrubbers were mandated. The co-op has built only one plant that I am aware of. TVA uses nuclear energy, for the most part. Southern Co has Farley Nuke in south Al. Other than that they purchase coal from Wyoming and other places. Al. coal is just as expensive. In 2006 a ton of coal was 25.00 plus shipping from Wy. I have been gone from Southern Co projects since Dec of 2007, but there are a lot of factors involved other than the birds!

I agree with the first two it is not like we have a choice on who we can use. don't matter how much it goes up if you want power you will pay it.

You do have the option to change most major appliances to gas, if you think you'll save money. Ha Ha. Aint that funny, switching to gas to save money. I personally think 175.00 a month for 2800 square feet is a good deal for total electric with a 3 hp pool pump and 3hp and 5 hp hottub motors. 2x6 steel studs help with energy efficiecy. R-30 exterior wall insulation and R-30 attic insulation does more than insulate against heat and cold. It insulates against the power provider. But, those were issues we thought about before we built, so we wouldn't have to fret after cost of living prices increased later on. Yes a rate increase stinks but, we knew 15 years ago it WOULD happen. And we know it WILL happen again.
