Wildlife expo set for Aug. 2

Published Thursday, July 24, 2008

The Alabama Cooperative Extension Center is holding its seventh annual Farm, House and Wildlife Expo to introduce Chilton County citizens to the extension branch and see their tax dollars at work.

The extension agents will have a variety of activities to entertain adults and children. There will be a petting zoo, a milk goat demonstration, a desert tasting tent with homemade ice creams and fruit deserts, a seminar on proper peach pruning techniques and other fruit and nut production informational sessions as well as a drug dog and gun demonstration. That is just a few of the day’s events.

“Not just farmers, but anyone interested is welcome to attend,” Jim Pitts, extension director, said. “It’s a great learning experience.”

The expo will have 32 different sessions, and something for everyone. County citizens can take advantage of the extension agents’ knowledge and see what resources are available to them as tax payers.

“We are family oriented,” Pitts said.

Tasting and growing information will be readily available on different varieties of figs, apples, peaches and tomatoes, said Pitts.

He also said a session on growing fish in cages for fun or production will be presented. An expert on cooking tilapia and catfish will be giving out new recipes to locals who attend.

“The event is free, and if you hang around long enough we’ll feed you supper,” Pitts said.

The Farm, House and Wildlife Expo will be on August 2 from noon to 5 p.m. on County Road 29.
