Authority hires new scrap metal hauler
Published Thursday, July 17, 2008
The Chilton County Solid Waste Authority is considering new options of what to do with its scrap metal.
Last night, the board decided to let independent hauler Randy Smith take care of the scraps, and any money that is made will be split evenly between him and the authority. The action, however, was made with the provision that he is properly insured and that the authority doesn’t have any liability over the hauling of the scrap metal.
A few months ago, the authority decided to use the City of Clanton to haul the Solid Waste Transfer Station’s scrap metal, but authority chairman Tom Bentley said Smith could potentially get more money out of the waste.
The authority is also going to take more time to consider whom they will recommend to the Chilton County Commission to fill two vacancies on the board due to upcoming municipal elections.
The authority has postponed its August meeting to the third Thursday in September when the members will be recommending two replacements.
At June’s meeting, the authority was informed that Sam Hicks and Bud Harrelson would no longer be serving. The board is made up of nine members consisting of all four mayors, independent haulers and people at large.
The commission must approve replacement board members.Because they moved the meetings, the authority already gave the go ahead to pay any bills that come due until September.
