Low turnout expected for primary runoff

Primary election ballot
William Popwell, chairman of the Chilton County Board of Registrars, estimates that only 12 percent of the Chilton County population will vote in tomorrow’s primary run-off election for president of Alabama’s Public Service Committee and Place 1 Judge for the Court of Criminal Appeals.
“The average person just doesn’t turn out and vote for them,” Popwell said.
Popwell said there are only two positions on the ticket, and they are not popular state offices.
For the Republican primary run-off, Beth Kellum and Lucie McLemore are running for the Court of Criminal Appeals Place 1 Judge. Twinkle Andress Cavanaugh and Matt Chancey are running for president of the Public Service Commission.
“A lot of people don’t even know we are having an election,” Glenn McGriff, Chilton County court clerk, said. “It’s just not going to be a good election. There are no local [candidates], and it’s statewide so it doesn’t generate a lot of interest.”
McGriff only received 10 absentee ballot requests for the run-off tomorrow.
Chilton County has 23,588 active voters for the 2008 election year.

The election process just gets crazy at times. I can't turn around at night or on the weekend until the phone is ringing with some politicians recorded message "vote for me", "vote for me", on and on and on. I wish there was a law prohibiting these phone calls. Well, I guess that's what caller ID is for.
