High 10: Isabella players Ruby Fernandez (16) and Amber Wyatt (23) celebrate with teammate Sarah Swanner after Swanner recorded an ace in Thursday’s win over Thorsby.

No. 7 Mustangs run record to 3-0

ISABELLA – In front of a packed house Thursday, Isabella defeated Thorsby 3-0 (25-17, 25-16, 25-14).

The match was the Mustangs first since being declared the No. 7 Class 2A team in the state, according to the Alabama Sports Writers Association. The match was unusual in that it was originally scheduled for Monday, but severe weather associated with Tropical Storm Fay caused school closings. The match also had an unusually high attendance: high school students were allowed to miss class to watch their Mustangs (3-0).

Krysta Tyler led the hosts with 13 assists and seven aces. Amber Wyatt had a match-high 10 kills. Carissa Eiland contributed eight kills and three blocks. Kimi Jones tallied five digs.

Michelle Hendrix had four kills and two assists for Thorsby. Teammates Jenny Fonseca and Brittany Maddox had six digs each, and Holly Smith led the Rebels (1-6) with three assists.

Isabella visits Chilton County High at 5 p.m. on Sept. 2 to take on the Tigers and Selma. Thorsby will travel to Jemison at 4:30 p.m. on Sept. 4.
