Plants donated to Habitat

Petals from the Past near Jemison has donated 25 plants for the current Habitat for Humanity project.

The house, which is under construction on County Road 418, is the future home of Mandy Champion and her daughter.

The plants include Lantana, Nandina, Barberry, Leucothoe, Magnolias and others.

“We kept it simple and used low maintenance plants,” said Petals co-owner Shelley Powell, wife of co-owner Jason Powell.

Habitat depends on a rotation of local nurseries who donate the plants for each project. Sod is being donated by Joe Mims.

Planting them yesterday were local Master Gardeners Gail Sharmon and Faye Smith, with the help of Champion and the youth of Verbena Baptist Church.

Habitat requires all homeowners to be trained in yard maintenance.

“Everyone needs a nice yard,” Powell said. “It makes you feel good.”
