Chilton County High School is offering all students attending high school in Chilton County and their parents an opportunity to learn about Advanced Placement and pre-AP courses on Jan. 16 at 5:30 p.m.

“We are wanting more students and parents to find out what they would be signing up for,” CCHS AP Coordinator Jamie Gault said.

Gault said students from at least three other high schools in the county have come to CCHS to take AP courses in the past.

Space has not been an issue in the past, but students from other schools would need to have their own transportation, Gault said.

Eight -grade students and their parents are also invited to the orientation in order to learn about pre-AP courses that they may be interested in as a high school freshman.

“The pre-AP prepares you for those AP courses,” Gault said.

She said “it is strongly encouraged and recommended” to take the pre-AP classes first. However, a junior, who had not taken pre-AP but is interested in taking AP courses, would not be required to complete those classes before taking an AP course.

Pre-AP courses are designed for freshman and sophomore students.

In addition to information about courses available and requirements, attendees will also hear comments about the experiences of students who have taken AP classes.

Some AP course teachers will also give comments.

CCHS has six AP classes available.

The hope is that the orientation will answer questions parents have and help them “make sure they are making the right decision for their students,” Gault said.

Scheduling for AP and Pre-AP classes for the 2018-2019 school year is expected to begin in March.
