Rain interrupts baseball, softball action

Rain pushed back the start of the baseball playoffs for Maplesville and Verbena, which were each scheduled to host a first-round doubleheader on Friday.

Both of those series are now slated to begin on Saturday with the Game 1 at 1 p.m. and Game 2 to follow around 3:30 p.m. at each location. If necessary, Game 3 will be held Monday at 3 p.m. for Verbena and 4 p.m. for Maplesville.

At press time, the Chilton County High School’s and Jemison’s first-round matchups remained scheduled for Friday.

The wet weather also forced the cancellation of the Chilton County softball tournament for the second time this season.

The tournament hosted by Jemison High School was originally scheduled for March 17-19, but only two games were played.

Friday was a designated weather day with schools closed throughout the county, which made it a perfect makeup date.

However, after a week of sunny skies the rain came through overnight on Thursday and drenched Jemison’s softball field.

The conditions of the playing surface caused the games to be cancelled yet again. As a result, the county tournament will not be played this year.
