The Chilton County Arts Council has announced the Fourth Annual Juried Art Show.

According to Arts Council President Sue Anne Hoyt, the show has grown each year, and inquiries for this year have already been coming in from students at the University of Montevallo, as well as individuals in Birmingham and Shelby County.

The show gives students a chance to exhibit and local artists a chance to see artwork from other places.

“It is a privilege to exhibit and a learning experience too,” Hoyt said. “We want to encourage people to learn and grow as artists and to share it with the public.”

All art will be on display throughout the month of May at the Rose Gallery.

A reception for participating artists will be from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. May 14 at the Arts Council’s Rose Gallery, located at 703 Second Ave. N. in downtown Clanton.

Winners will be announced at the reception.

The juror (judge) for the event will be a non-local individual.

The show is open to all artists over the age of 18 and will include two divisions: Fine Art and Fine Handcrafted Art.

Included in the Fine Art division are painting, drawing, photography and printmaking.

In the Fine Handcrafted Arts division are ceramics, sculpture, glass, fiber and wood art, clay art and jewelry.

Many times, people categorize the design of handmade items as “crafting” especially if the item serves another purpose. Such would be the case with certain ceramics or glass.

But Hoyt explained that these items can in themselves be works of art as well. She calls them “3D art,” as opposed to the “2D art” of painting and photography.

That is the reasoning behind the two prize divisions and “gives a chance to respect art that traditionally has been considered a craft or useful and moves it into the arena of fine art.”

Prizes for first through third places will be offered in each category, as well as Honorable Mention.

Entry fee for one art piece is $10 for members and $20 for non-members. The fee for more than one entry is $10 for each additional piece.

A person may have a maximum of two entries.

Checks should be made payable to Chilton County Arts Council.

The deadline for entry and drop off of work is April 28.

Guidelines for entries include:

•All art work must be original; no replications of any published and/or previously produced art will be allowed. Plagiarized works will not be accepted. All pieces must pass committee review.

•The maximum acceptable dimensions of each piece are 24 inches tall by 28 inches wide including frame.

•2D pieces must be ready to hang.

•Work may be hand-delivered, along with entry form, to the Arts Council Rose Gallery on April 27 from 1-4 p.m. or on April 28 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

•Pick-up time for artwork will be May 25 from 1-4 p.m.

•To schedule another drop-off or pick-up time, call (205) 258-5147.

•Artists may price and sell their work. Each artist is responsible for their own transactions and for paying their own taxes. All work sold will be retained until the end of the show.
