County forms committee to discuss future of fair

A committee formed during the Chilton County Commission meeting on Monday plans to meet and discuss the future of the Chilton County Fair.

Commissioner Shannon Welch brought up the discussion during the meeting saying he attended a recent Kiwanis Club meeting and the discussion of the Chilton County Fair was brought up.

Welch said the group needed help facilitating a meeting with county officials including county engineer, Tony Wearren, Chilton County Industrial Development Coordinator Fred Crawford and whoever else wanted to attend to discuss the next steps for a new location of the fair.

In 2014, the fair had to change its location from the longtime site near the Chilton County Airport, due to regulations that stated tall rides posed a potential safety hazard for aircraft.

Since that time, the Kiwanis Club has been seeking a new permanent site in hope of bringing back all the familiar events that are associated with the Chilton County Fair, such as live entertainment, exhibits and competitions.

The fair has most recently been held at Clanton City Park in the open area near the children’s playground.

Kiwanis member Jason Calhoun addressed the commission saying he appreciated anything the commission could do in helping facilitate a committee to discuss the future of the fair.

“We are getting close to the point that we need to act soon to see if it is possible to use the property that was purchased,” Calhoun said. “We have a local fair vendor who takes pride in taking care of the fair. In order for us to secure him for that time period this year, we need to have an idea of where the fair is going to be. We feel like he may move on and lock that date down in another state so we want to go ahead and let him know.”

In 2013, land was leased off Chilton County Road 28, or Second Avenue South, near the intersection with Alabama Highway 145 that could potentially serve as grounds for the Chilton County Fair.

Welch asked if the commission would allow him to schedule a meeting with Wearren, members of the Kiwanis Club, and the IDB board to meet and work out a solution.

Commission Chairman Allen Caton suggested having commissioner Joe Headley also meet with the group.

Commissioners voted to appoint Headley and Welch to form a committee and work out some of the issues and report back to the commission.
