Short ran it in himself with time winding down in the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Short threw a 51-yard touchdown pass to Juwan Tyus to make the score 36-0 with 7:48 left to play in the game, but the Devils weren’t through.

Johnanthan Bryant ran in a 44-yard touchdown, and then in the final seconds of the game, Short was sacked and fumbled when Christopher Headley picked up the loose ball and ran 62 yards for a touchdown.

“We played hard tonight,” Verbena coach Mike Harris said. “We never quit. Defensively, we played our best game yet. Ellwood Christian has a really good team and they played well tonight.”

Harris said before Verbena heads to Fruitdale Oct. 2, his players will spend the week working on fundamentals and focusing on getting healthy.

“We have a few guys who were injured last week, so we really need to work on getting healthy and strong, and just hone up on our fundamentals,” he said.
