Maplesville’s 48-21 loss to Tanner on Friday was the first regular season defeat for the Red Devils since Sept. 28, 2012.

Visiting Tanner scored first, on a quarterback keeper by Chadarius Townsend with 1:16 remaining in the first quarter.

The visiting Rattlers made it 14-0 at George Walker Jr. Stadium on a run by Tiquaveious Mayberry with 7:59 on the clock in the second quarter.

Class 1A No. 1 Maplesville (4-1 overall, 2-0 region) cut the deficit in half on a pass from Cole Spencer to Trey Mixon with 4:59 left in the first half.

The Red Devils trailed 14-7 at halftime.

Tanner’s Jamal Townsend scored with 7:17 remaining in the third quarter to make it 21-7 following the point-after.

Terence Dunlap found the end zone for MHS with 4:25 left in the third. The extra point was no good, and the Devils trailed 21-13.

The Devils squandered any chance they had to threaten the lead in the fourth quarter by turning the ball over twice.

Chadarius Townsend made Maplesville pay with a touchdown run to make it 28-13, but Spencer answered for the hosts with a touchdown run followed by a two-point conversion run to cut the deficit to 28-21.

Townsend then scored on a 75-yard run, and after another Maplesville turnover, Townsend put the game away with his fourth touchdown run.
