Isabella coach reaches milestone in season-opening win

Isabella’s volleyball team entered its season ranked No. 6 among the state’s Class 1A teams, and with coach Glen Graham optimistic about the team’s potential.

The Mustangs include five seniors, two juniors, seven sophomores and one freshman.

The last time IHS played Selma, it was the program’s 300th win. The two teams played Thursday with Graham seeking the 450th win of his career.

The Mustangs won, 3-0 (25-6, 25-9, 25-10).

The team compiled 23 kills, one block, 10 digs, 15 assists and 18 aces.

Synia Chattman had six kills, while Jayda Jones had six kills and three aces; Kinley Tuttle had two kills; Lexi Owens had two kills and one block; Noelle Fjeldstad had one kill and one dig; Sophia Underwood had two kills and five digs; Makaela Littleton had one kill, two aces and five assists; Hailey Underwood had one kill, six assists and one dig; Brianna Tyler led the team with 13 aces and one dig; Kasey Grimes had three assists and Caley Booth had one assist and two digs.

IHS came out motivated to win even though the players didn’t know about their coach’s milestone.

Selma tried to fight back and had three aces, two digs, four kills and seven blocks, but it wasn’t enough to stop the Mustangs.

Isabella plays in its first tournament of the season Saturday at Marbury. the next regular season game for the Mustangs is Sept. 1 at Thorsby.

Isabella’s junior varsity team also played Thursday, led by coach David Hayes, and came out with the same force.

The JV Mustangs won, 2-0 (25-6, 25-5)

The team had 22 aces and four kills.

Heaven Fowler had four aces, Baeleigh Atchison had two aces, Alyssa Wyatt had 10 aces and two kills, Elizabeth Alsott had two aces, Kiara Ford had one kill, Katelyn Talley had three aces and Savannah Hubbard had one kill and one ace.

Isabella’s JV will also play Sept. 1 at Thorsby.

The Isabella middle school team, coached by Angie Lawley, will have its first game of the season Monday against Montevallo.
