An 18-wheeler caught fire on Highway 31 near Thorsby on Thursday.

The trailer of an 18-wheeler traveling on Highway 31 near Thorsby caught fire Thursday.

Thorsby Fire Chief Lee Gunn said the vehicle was apparently traveling south into Thorsby when a blown-out tire sparked a blaze that spread to the trailer, which was carrying dried fruit.

Some of the cargo also caught fire.

A large hole was visible in the side of the trailer to motorists driving by on 31 north of Thorsby, with some of the cargo spilled out onto the ground.

The driver of the truck had exited the vehicle before authorities arrived at the scene, and neither he nor anyone else was injured.

Though the truck was pulled off to the side of the road, traffic was still interrupted by the fire, Gunn said, because it was unclear what was contained in the trailer and whether it could pose a danger to passers-by.

Jemison and Cedar Grove fire departments, as well as other emergency responders, were on the scene to assist.

The incident occurred at about 4:45 p.m. Firefighters battled the blaze for about 30 minutes.
