Isabella’s softball team split its first two games of the Class 1A state tournament Thursday with one win and one loss.

The Mustangs earned a spot in the double-elimination state tournament after clinching a first-place finish in the South Central Region Tournament last week.

IHS started out slow against Ragland Thursday morning at Lagoon Park in Montgomery, playing three innings of scoreless ball.

In the bottom of the fourth, Kacie Adams kicked off the inning with a double to left field, followed by a sacrifice bunt by Chelsea Cox.

Chandler Kirkland smacked an RBI single up the middle to put the Mustangs on the board, 1-0.

Isabella allowing only five runners on base over the course of the game.

The lead increased in the bottom of the sixth when Adams once again led off the inning, this time with a shot to left field that was followed by singles from Cox, Kirkland, Noelle Fjeldstad and Jayda Jones.

Mikaela Littleton drove in the last run of the game with a fly ball to center field, extending the lead to 4-0.

Cox got the win on the mound with five strikeouts while allowing only two hits.

The win placed Isabella against Brantley High School later in the day for a contest that would ensure a spot in the semifinals.

Isabella’s four-game playoff winning streak came to a halt in its second game of the state tournament.

An offensively aggressive Brantley team got the 6-0 win after the Mustangs left 10 runners on base during the game.

While Isabella hitters had little trouble putting runners in scoring position, they were unable to cross home plate, which ultimately caused them to fall into the loser’s bracket.

Isabella was scheduled to play Pleasant Home Thursday evening.
