Six softball teams advance to regionals

Six local softball teams will compete in regional qualifier playoff tournaments this week.

Billingsley, Chilton County High School, Isabella, Jemison, Thorsby and Verbena all finished either first or second in their respective area tournaments to qualify for the regionals.

CCHS was the runner-up in the Class 6A, Area 6 tournament. The Tigers (21-10) will play Hueytown in the first round of the South Central Regional Qualifier in Troy.

All regional tournaments begin Thursday and last through Saturday.

Also playing in Troy will be Jemison, Billingsley, Isabella and Verbena.

Jemison was the runner-up in Class 5A, Area 7 and will play Marbury in the first round of the regional.

Isabella (18-11) was the runner-up in Class 1A, Area 5 and will play Wadley (10-8) in the first round of the regional.

Verbena won Class 1A, Area 6 and will play Victory Christian in the first round of the regional.

Billingsley won Class 1A, Area 5 and will play Talladega County Central in the first round of the regional.

Thorsby is the only local team competing in a regional other than those being held in Troy.

The Rebels, who were runners-up in Class 2A, Area 9, will play Sumiton Christian in the first round of the North-Central Regional Qualifier to be held in Tuscaloosa.

Eight teams are competing in each regional. The top two teams in each regional will advance to the state tournament, to be held May 13-16 at Lagoon Park in Montgomery.
