Evelyn Susie Burnette Welch, 81, passed away April 13 at St. Vincent’s Hospital East in Birmingham, following an extended illness.

Born in Jemison, as an adult she lived in Birmingham and Huntsville and Merritt Island, Fla.

Mrs. Welch was the wife of the late Oliver K. Welch of Clanton and Huntsville, daughter of the late Clyde G. and Lona (Bolton) Burnett, and sister to the late Thomasine Burnett, all of Clanton.

She is survived by her brother, Bobby D. Burnette (Linda), Dallas, Ga.; nephew, Jeffrey D. Burnette (Jane) of Dallas, Ga. and her niece, Lori Burnette Helm of La Plata, Md.; grandniece and nephew Haley Grace and Jeffrey Ryan Burnette of Dallas, Ga., and grandnephew Eric James Helm of La Plata, Md. and ever caring and supportive godchildren, Sabrina Jones Thomas and Wendy Ward Jones of Birmingham and William (Bill) Ward, Jr., of Huntsville.

Mrs. Welch was a member of Huntsville First Baptist Church and a past member and officer of her Beta Sigma Phi Sorority chapter. She worked for the Federal government and later, as a homemaker, became a self-taught cook and caterer, teaching cooking classes at a local community college.

A friend to everyone who met her, Mrs. Welch’s generosity was evidenced in her work with hospice and other local charities, as a volunteer for the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra, and anytime she was needed by a friend. She loved her friends and family, her dog Krystal, travel and good restaurants, University of Alabama football, baseball, flowers and all things in nature. She will be missed by all who knew her.

Mortuary and cremation services were provided by Martin Funeral Home. A private remembrance service is planned.
