After roughly 10 acres burned in the northwest corner of Chilton County Wednesday morning, fire officials on Thursday said the wildfire was contained.

Doug Gantt, District Fire Management Officer with the Talladega National Forest, Oakmulgee Ranger District, said crews responded to a “smoke report” in Chilton County, south of Alabama Highway 183 at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday.

“We discovered one active fire burning and an adjacent burned area that had burned itself out overnight,” Gantt said. “Both fires were on Forest Service lands.”

Gantt said fire crews took action, constructing a “dozer line” to contain the fire and burned out the remaining fuels to secure the line.

The total acreage for both burned areas was approximately 10 acres, Gantt said.

There were no structures damaged in the fire.

Law enforcement with the Forest Service is investigating the cause of the fire.

Due to the wildfire, a prescribed burn in the Talladega National Forest, Oakmulgee District scheduled for Jan. 21 was cancelled.

The prescribed burn was scheduled to burn approximately 1,100 acres in the Oakmulgee Wildlife Management Area, north of the Pondville community.
