Four schools in Clanton were placed on lockdown Thursday morning after two males shoplifted from a nearby business and fled on foot toward the schools.

Capt. Neil Fetner with the Clanton Police Department said authorities received a call shortly after 9 a.m. of a shoplifting occurring at the Dollar Tree on Seventh Street South, near Walmart in Clanton.

Fetner said two males, one a white male and the other a Hispanic or black male, fled Dollar Tree on foot after shoplifting and crossed Highway 31 toward Chilton County High School.

Once on campus, a school resource officer asked the schools including CCHS, Clanton Intermediate School, Clanton Middle School and Clanton Elementary School to go into a “soft lockdown” procedure while officers checked the area, Fetner said.

Officers checked the area and did not locate the suspects, and campuses went back to normal operations by 10:15 a.m.

As of Thursday afternoon, the two men had not been located.

Fetner said the CPD currently has no leads as to the whereabouts of the men.

“We take these events seriously,” Fetner said. “It helps us identify security vulnerabilities, and is a great way to test our security procedures.”
