The Verbena varsity boys basketball team got out to a fast start against county rival Isabella, cruising to a 60-18 win and maintaining a perfect 8-0 record for the season.

The Red Devils (8-0, 1-0) came out shooting red-hot, opening a 14-0 lead to start the contest, thanks in part to the tandem of Christian Agee and Juwan Tyus, who scored a combined 10 points in the first 3:22 of the game.

Four points by Chase Pate led the Mustangs (1-5, 0-1) in the first period, but Verbena closed out the period with a 21-8 lead.

Tyus and Agee continued to be a thorn in the side of the Mustangs in the early minutes of the second period as multiple steals and rebounds aided in Tyus accounting for eight of the Red Devils’ 15 second-period points.

Two free throws by Jacob Carroll were the only points in the period for the Mustangs as the Red Devils took a 36-10 lead into halftime.

Tyus once again got scoring started for the Red Devils as action got underway in the third period, but with a comfortable lead, the Red Devil starters played sparingly during the period.

Six different Red Devils combined for points in the third period, and after an old-fashioned three-pointer by Pate and a Mustang three-pointer, Verbena took a 52-16 lead to the final period.

Two baskets by Quandarius Ray, a basket by Chris Cook and a basket by Hakeem Underwood were more than enough to overpower a single basket by Jeffrey Underwood in the fourth period, as the Red Devils cruised to their eighth straight win of the season.

Tyus led Verbena with 14 points, five rebounds and four steals. Underwood added 12 points, nine rebounds and five steals for the Red Devils.

Pate led the Mustangs with seven points, four rebounds, three steals and a block.

Red Devils march past Loachapoka

The Verbena boys basketball team took a home win over the Loachapoka Indians at home, edging out the visitors, 65-52, on Dec. 9.

Juwan Tyus had 30 points in the contest, while Christian Agee posted 10 and Jacob Cleckler had nine.

The win moved to the Red Devils to 7-0 on the season and 1-0 in area play.
