Isabella girls take win over Verbena

The Isabella Mustangs and Verbena Red Devils squared off in a cross-county rivalry matchup on Dec. 12, with the Mustangs taking a 46-10 win.

A free throw apiece by Caley Booth and Synia Chattman opened scoring for the Mustangs, while a Makayla Mims basket for Verbena tied the game at 2-2.

Booth later gave the Mustangs (5-3 overall, 1-0 area) a two-point lead, but a Red Devil three-pointer  gave Verbena its first lead of the game.

With the game tied at 7-all and just 13 seconds to play, an Alexis Owens basket at the buzzer gave the Mustangs a 9-7 lead at the end of the first period.

The game got out of hand quickly in the second quarter as turnovers cost the Red Devils heavily. The Devils were outscored 21-0 in the period thanks to multiple steals by Sophia Underwood and Chattman, as the Mustangs took a 30-7 lead into halftime.

In the second half, Booth got things started with a two-point basket with Chattman adding another to give the Mustangs a 34-7 lead with 5:50 left in the third period. Makaylie Kelley broke an 11:04 scoring drought for the Red Devils with a two-point basket, with Mims adding a free throw with 0:44 to play in the third.

With one period left to play, the Mustangs held a commanding 38-10 lead.

Hailey Underwood started the scoring for Isabella in the fourth period, with Chattman adding a free throw along with a basket by Booth to stretch the Mustangs’ lead to 43-10. A late two-point basket by Sofia Biancalana brought the game to its final of 46-10.

Chattman led Isabella with 12 points, six rebounds and seven steals, while Booth added 12 points, five rebounds and two steals for the Mustangs.

Mims led the Red Devils with five points, seven rebounds and two steals.
