Those who packed Alton Cobb Gymnasium on Dec. 5 got their money’s worth as they witnessed basketball games that came down to the final minutes of play.

Jemison’s girls won 36-25 in a game that wasn’t decided until the fourth quarter.

India Satterfield and Taylor Ray sank free throws for both teams to start the scoring in the first half of the varsity girls’ game, before Maria Flores added a basket to give the Panthers a two-point lead.

With Jemison leading 5-2 with 3 minutes left in the period, a Kristina Caton basket pulled Chilton County High School to within one point of the Panthers.

Back-to-back three pointers by Laura Vinzant helped turn an 8-0 Panthers run into a 13-4 Jemison lead at the end of the first period.

Both teams struggled to find the basket during the second period, shooting a combined 3-of-25 from the field.

A four-point CCHS run brought the score to 15-8 midway through the second period, as the Tigers outscored the Panthers 7-3 in the period.

Despite the advantage, the Tigers went to the half down 16-11.

Two and a half minutes passed in the third period before Lexis Blackmon added the first points of the half.

Satterfield and Ray added baskets for the Panthers to bring the score to 20-16 late in the period.

A free throw by Blackmon brought the score to 20-17, but the Panthers answered with a couple of baskets and free throws by Vinzant and Satterfield to make the score 25-18 going to the final period of play.

Free throws by Kadesha Lee and Satterfield were the only points through the first 2 minutes of the period, as Satterfield added two more to make it 28-18.

Satterfield added another free throw, but Blackmon answered with an old-fashioned three-point play to bring the score to 29-21.

With an eight-point Panthers lead and most of the scoring being done at the free throw line, the Panthers outscored the Tigers 7-4 down the stretch on the way to their fifth consecutive win.

Vinzant led the Panthers with 14 points and nine rebounds. Satterfield added 13 points, five rebounds and five steals for Jemison.

Blackmon led the Tigers with 11 points, six rebounds and a steal.
