The town of Maplesville will accept applications for the 23rd annual Toys For Kids program starting Nov. 5.

Toys For Kids was launched by former Maplesville Police Chief George Smith in 1992 as an outlet to provide Christmas gifts for children whose families would have trouble affording gifts.

Completed applications for assistance will be accepted at Town Hall from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. only on Wednesdays during November until the week of Thanksgiving.

Applications will be accepted Monday and Tuesday only during the week of Thanksgiving due to Town Hall closing at noon on Nov. 26, the day before Thanksgiving.

The last day to submit an application is Tuesday, Nov. 25.

Applications will be available throughout November at Town Hall from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday–Friday.

Those submitting applications must provide a copy of the birth certificate of each child listed on the application form; verification of food stamps, if applicable; a copy of the most recent payroll checks for both parents; and a non-refundable $2 application fee which serves as a donation to the Toys For Kids program fund.

In 2013, the program received more than $10,000 to purchase gifts for 99 children from 39 families.

Monetary donations and new, or unopened, toys will also be accepted.

Anyone may make a donation, including individuals, businesses and former program recipients.

“We accept donations every day of the week,” Town Clerk Dawn Smitherman said. “We’ve already started getting those in.”

Toys may be dropped off at Town Hall from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays.

Monetary donations may be mailed to P.O. Box 9, Maplesville, AL 36750.

The deadline to submit monetary or material donations for 2014 is Dec. 1.

However, any donations submitted after Dec. 1 will still be accepted and will roll over to the 2015 program fund.

Toys For Kids program applicants will be notified of whether they are approved.

“They have to give us a good telephone number, and then we will notify them,” Smitherman said.

All donations are tax deductible.
