Authorities are looking for a suspect involved in an attempted robbery at Dollar General in Maplesville on Sunday.

The Maplesville Police Department responded to a call at about 8:30 p.m. Sunday of a black male suspect holding a cashier at gunpoint at Dollar General, Maplesville Police Chief Todd Ingram said.

The suspect, wearing a hood over the majority of his face, entered the store, pulled a gun on the cashier and tried to get her to open the store’s safe, according to Ingram.

When the safe would not open, the suspect quickly exited the store and entered the parking lot, Ingram said.

“He left the store with nothing,” Ingram said.

When a citizen in a truck in the parking lot attempted to stop the suspect from fleeing, the suspect fired his gun multiple times at the truck, Ingram said.

The citizen was not shot but sustained minor cuts and scratches from glass fragments and shrapnel entering the truck cab during the gunfire, Ingram said. No one else was injured during the incident.

The suspect fled the scene in a white four-door sedan before authorities could apprehend him, Ingram said.

“The officer got there within 45 seconds of the suspect leaving,” he said, noting the time that elapsed from when the suspect entered the store to when the suspect fled was about two minutes. “It could have been worse.”

Police were unable to obtain the suspect’s license plate number from video footage at the store, Ingram said.

If arrested, the suspect could be charged with robbery, discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle and menacing.

Anyone with information regarding the incident is urged to contact the Maplesville Police Department at (334) 366-4211.
