The Chilton County High School Future Farmers of America (FFA) student organization will hold the ninth annual smoke detector giveaway Saturday, Oct. 18, from 9–10:30 a.m. at Clanton Fire Station 1 behind Regions Bank.

“Our FFA invites the public to take advantage of this giveaway,” FFA President Brandon Bolding said.

FFA is a career tech student organization of the Agriscience program at CCHS.

The organization began giving away smoke detectors in 2007 as a community service event in response to the efforts of the Clanton Fire Department and October being National Fire Prevention Month.

FFA members hope to provide smoke detectors to as many homes as possible.

The drive also generates awareness to everyone on the importance of installing smoke detectors, and of maintenance, such as changing batteries, of existing smoke detectors.

The CCHS FFA group has given out about 300 smoke detectors since its inception.

“We would like to extend a special thanks to Tyson Elrod (Walmart store manager), David Driver (Clanton city fire chief), and all the businesses responsible for making this effort possible,” FFA sponsor Marlon Harton said.

A limited number of smoke detectors and batteries will be available on a first-come basis.

FFA will also hold a drawing for a carbon monoxide detector.

The winner’s name will be drawn from those who go by the fire station Oct. 18 and receive smoke detectors.
