Homecoming provides a week full of distractions, but for Chilton County High School’s football team it also provided a needed spark as the Tigers picked up a much-needed area win over Valley, 20-6, on Friday night.

Kevin Kemp recovered a fumble on Valley’s first possession, and two plays later, Anthony Chavez connected with Cade Hatch for a 10-yard touchdown completion to put the Tigers up 6-0.

The next CCHS drive stalled, but a Chavez 17-yard field goal sailed through the uprights for three more points to give the Tigers (2-5 overall, 1-3 area) a 9-0 lead.

Chavez accounted for three more Chilton County points with a 12-yard field goal just before the half to send the Tigers to the locker room up 12-0.

Kemp took advantage of a mishandled Valley snap from their own 8-yard line and recorded a sack for a safety to make the score 14-0 early in the fourth quarter.

With 2 minutes left in the game and facing a fourth-and-seven from the Valley 27-yard line, Chavez and Hatch again connected for a touchdown, this time to put the Tigers up 20-0.

The Rams (3-3, 1-2) broke the shutout with just 41 seconds to play.

“We have to take each game as it comes,” CCHS senior Keandre Binion said. “Hopefully we can continue to play well and come away from these next four games 4-0 to clench a playoff birth.”

Chavez passed for 178 yards and two touchdowns, while Tyler Henderson led the defense with 17 tackles.

“We came in with very high expectations on this game, and everyone played great all night,” Chavez said. “We couldn’t have done it without the entire team playing a great game. This is just the first of many more wins to come.”
