The Chilton County Arts Council has added a new class to its fall art education schedule.

The new class will cover two-dimensional techniques for beginners and more advanced students, and will be taught by abstract artist Sue Anne Hoyt.

“This will be a relaxed class for adults of all ability levels, and it’s going to be hands-on all the way,” said Hoyt, who also serves as the Arts Council’s Rose Gallery director. “We’ll cover techniques in painting, drawing and collage-making. We’ll be creating art and discussing not only the methods but also the ideas behind the art.”

The classes will be offered on Thursday evenings from 6:30-9 p.m. beginning Oct. 9. The cost for each student is $15 per class session for non-Arts Council members, and $11.25 per session for members. Class enrollment forms and Arts Council membership forms are available at the Arts Council building before each class and online at www.chiltoncountyartscouncil.com.

Supplies needed for the class include paper strong enough to handle ink, marker and paint. The size is up to participants, but Hoyt suggests at least 12-by-14 inches, preferably larger; water-based markers; scissors; glue or scrapbooking glue; palette knife (at least one) for spreading glue and/or mixing paint; tempera or acrylic paint including primary red, blue and yellow, black, white, green and violet, and additional colors if you choose. No oil-based paint will be used. Participants should begin collecting collage materials and include many solid colors as well as images, patterns, etc. These may be small pieces as well as larger. Other supplies include pencils, a variety of brushes in sizes and shapes for water based media, a container for water (something fairly large that won’t tip easily) paper towels, sturdy 4-by-4 inch and 6-by-6 inch board cut from something sturdy like mat board or poster board.

“Even if you can’t draw a straight line, come join us,” says Hoyt. “Anyone and everyone with a love for art and a desire to create will be welcome.”

The Chilton County Arts Council is located at 703 Second Ave. N. in downtown Clanton.
