9-16 Kundrat Obit

Sarah Ann Kundrat, 80, of Bluffton, passed away Sept. 10 following a courageous, extended battle with Parkinson’s and COPD.

Kundrat was born on Dec. 5, 1933, in Elmore, to Gertrude and William Howard Buckner. The family moved to Clanton, where she attended and graduated from Chilton County High School. After living and working in Birmingham for a year, she moved to Sacramento, Calif., where she met her future husband, Steve. They were married on Oct. 24, 1953, and eventually settled in Mansfield, Ohio. When her two children reached school age, she attended Mansfield Business College. After obtaining her General Business certificate, she began to work in the offices of Konstam, Mass. and Upham in downtown Mansfield. As her entrepreneurial spirit began to emerge, she opened an Art Accents craft store in Johnny Appleseed Shopping Center. She sold the store before she and Steve “retired” to Hilton Head Plantation in 1985. When the Island Blueprint shop her daughter was working at became available, she purchased and ran it with Steve for several years. After she accepted an offer to sell the store, she began serving in a variety of retail sales positions on the island including Tanner/Doncaster, Belk, and Stein Mart. She and Steve formally “retired” when they moved to Sun City Hilton Head in 2003.

Kundrat is survived by her husband, Steve; son, John; sister, Patsy Robertson; brothers, Howard Buckner and Bobby Buckner; granddaughter, Sarah Graham; grandsons, Richard Carlyle and Robert Carlyle; and son-in-law, Ron Carlyle. She was predeceased by her daughter, Lisa, brothers James Buckner and Larry Buckner, and sister Virginia Buckner.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m., Sept. 20, at Church of the Palms, 1425 Okatie Highway, Okatie, SC 29909.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice Care of the Lowcountry or Church Of The Palms.
