Clanton Alfa Insurance Customer Sales Representative Lilly Carroll is spearheading a pop tab project to benefit Birmingham’s Ronald McDonald House.

Carroll started the “Drop Your Tops” campaign in July, asking anyone who lives or works in Chilton County to donate his or her aluminum pop tabs from a soda or soup can.

“This has been going on in different counties throughout Alabama for many years,” Carroll said. “This is the first time we are doing this in Chilton County, but we are excited to see how everything goes.”

Anyone can donate to the project by removing the aluminum tabs from the top of any soda or soup can, and bring the collected tabs to any Alfa Insurance location in Chilton County.

Carroll said there are four locations including two in Clanton, one in Maplesville and one in Jemison.

“This is a great project because anyone can participate,” Carroll said. “If you drink a lot of sodas, you can start taking the tabs off of the cans and just bring them by one of the offices in Chilton County.”

The tabs will be collected every few months and transported to the Ronald McDonald House who will then recycle the tabs for money.

Each pound of pop tabs is worth 70 cents at a recycling center.

The Ronald McDonald House has 41 rooms for families of children admitted to UAB Hospital or Children’s of Alabama due to sickness or injury.

The Ronald McDonald House serves as a temporary home for those unable to travel long distances to the hospital, Carroll said.

“The thing about the Ronald McDonald House is you never know when something might happen that you might need to stay there,” Carroll said.

Since 2011, the Ronald McDonald house has raised $19,000 from counties statewide who participated in the pop tabs program.

Carroll said she wanted to create a “catchy” slogan for people to stop and take notice, and hopefully start donating.

Carroll plans to distribute small, clear boxes to different offices throughout Chilton County in the coming weeks with the slogan “Drop Your Tops” listed on the front of the box.

“We don’t have a deadline for when people can stop donating,” Carroll said. “Every couple of months we will take the tabs we have collected and donate them.”
