Clanton City Council votes to retain grant writer

Clanton’s City Council voted unanimously Monday to retain LP Campbell Company as a grant writer for the city.

Mayor Billy Joe Driver, in recommending the measure, said the city’s share of a salary for the service is $7,500, with Peoples Southern Bank matching the amount as a community project.

Louise Campbell has applied on the city’s behalf for several grants during the service year from Aug. 9, 2013, to Aug. 8, 2014. According to information provided to the council, some of those projects that are pending or approved are listed below:

•Grant in the amount of $34,000 through the Land and Water Conservation Fund for renovations to the playground at West End Park.

•Assistance to Firefighters Grant in the amount of $107,531 for three monitors/defibrillators and 21 PASS devices to replace outdated equipment.

•ADECA Law Enforcement Grant in the amount of $19,485 for video cameras and upgrades for police vehicles (it was noted that this grant application was “substantially prepared by the police department and reviewed/edited by L.P. Campbell).

•Industrial Access Road and Bridge Grant in the amount of $590,767 for improved access roads to serve the Boatright Railroad Products development in the Chilton County Industrial Park.

•Community Development Block Grant in the amount of $450,000 for Phase II of the sewer rehabilitation program in the West End community.

•Community Development Block Grant Economic Development Fund in the amount of $200,000 for infrastructure in support of the new hospital project.

•Appalachian Regional Commission grant in the amount of $200,000 for infrastructure in support of the new hospital project.

In other business, the council, approved paying the necessary bills and minutes from the July 14 meeting.

Council members Bobby Cook and Mary Mell Smith were absent from the meeting.
