6-20 CA Obit for WEBHerbert Tillman Salter Jr., 93, of Clanton, passed away June 18, in Newnan, Ga.

He was born on Nov. 29, 1920, in Hueytown and was predeceased by his parents, Herbert Tillman and Louise Vines; his sister, Erma Lou Lawson and his brother, James Benton Salter.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Margaret Lowery Salter of Clanton; daughters, Suzanne Brooks (Darrell); Sharon Liebe (Larry) of Newnan, Ga. and son, Bert Salter (Christa) of Vestavia Hills; grandchildren, Rachel, Madison and Ben Salter of Vestavia Hills and Meredith Brooks and Christopher and Lauren Liebe all of Newnan, Ga.; and his sister, Sara Jean Jennings of Hueytown.

Salter was a 1943 graduate of Alabama Polytechnic Institute (Auburn University).

He was a founding member and past president of the Chilton County Auburn Club.

He was honored in 2013 by the Auburn Alumni Association for his 70 years as an Alumni member and his dedication and support to Auburn and the Chilton County Auburn Club.

He was an Elder Emeritus of Grace Fellowship Presbyterian Church in Clanton.

He was recently honored for his service and faithfulness with the naming of Salter Hall at the church.

Herb was owner of Salter Distributing (Amoco Oil of Chilton and Shelby Counties).

He was later employed with the U.S Postal service as a mail carrier in Clanton.

He was a past president and 61 year member of the Clanton Lions Club.

In addition to his love for Auburn sports he was an avid sports enthusiast. He had a passion for hunting, bowling, golfing, collecting and restoring antique cars and traveling with friends in his RV camping club.

Visitation will be June 20 from 5p.m.-7 p.m. at Martin Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be June 21 at 10 a.m. at Martin’s with burial in Chilton Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Grace Fellowship PCA building fund, Salter Hall, 1208 4th Ave. N., Clanton, 35045.
