Lions Club presents donation checks

As part of its charitable efforts, the Clanton Lions Club presented donation checks Thursday to representatives of local organizations the club supports annually.

Clanton Lions Club members Tyson Elrod, Britt Culpepper, Tommy Patterson, Renee Green and Jim Norton presented checks to the following organizations:

•Distinguished Young Women Program – Brooke Clark, who was the 2012 Distinguished Young Women representative for Chilton County, accepted the check.

The national scholarship program, formerly America’s Junior Miss, is designed to propel high school girls to reaching their full potential.

•Care Net Pregnancy Resource Center of Chilton County – Executive Director Susan Scott accepted the check.

Care Net is a non-profit organization that provides counseling and medical services to women affected by unplanned pregnancies. The group’s mission is to offer support and education to women, men and youth regarding abstinence, pregnancy and post-abortion issues.

•Chilton Education Foundation PEECH Grant Committee – Betty Giles with the PEECH Grant Committee accepted the check.

The grants, called Partners Enhancing Education in Chilton County grants, are given by the Chilton Education Foundation, a non-profit organization founded in 1996 for the purpose of helping teachers help students.

The grants help teachers purchase classroom materials for their students to use.

•YMCA of Chilton County – Director Angie Wright accepted the check.

YMCA of Chilton County offers activities for people of all ages in a family-oriented environment.

The Y’s mission is to bring families closer, encourage good health and foster connections through fitness, sports and fun.

•Raleigh’s Place – Co-owner Sharon King accepted the check.

Raleigh’s Place is a children’s home and summer camp near Lake Mitchell.

The camp is free and designed for foster children, adoptive children who are or have been in foster care and children in relative placement homes.

•Chilton County Humane Society – Director Jessica Terry accepted the check.

The Chilton County Humane Society is a non-profit organization that has provided sheltering services for homeless and unwanted animals in the area for more than 20 years.

The organization places animals in new homes through its adoption services.

The 2013 Peach Queens – Miss Peach Kelcie Knowles, Junior Miss Peach Anna Calhoun, Young Miss Peach Mattie Woodall and Little Miss Peach Emma Owens – were present Thursday for the check presentations.

They will crown the 2014 Peach Queens later this month.

The Little Miss Peach Pageant will be held Saturday, June 21 at 6:30 p.m. at Chilton County High School.

Young Miss Peach will be held Monday, June 23 at 6:30 p.m., followed by Junior Miss Peach on Tuesday, June 24 at 6:30 p.m. and Miss Peach on Thursday, June 26 at 6:30 p.m., all at CCHS.

The Peach Parade will take place in Clanton on Saturday, June 28 at 9 a.m., and the Peach Auction will follow at 10:30 a.m.

Proceeds from the Peach pageants and auction go toward the Clanton Lions Club’s charitable efforts in the community, benefiting groups such as those listed above.

“We’re excited and looking forward to having another great peach season,” Clanton Lions Club President Tyson Elrod said. “We’re glad to continue giving back to the community through our donations.”
