The Bears finally removed the goose egg on the scoreboard with two runs in the fourth inning.

A lead off single by Dalton Davis set up a Mason Friday RBI single. Friday went on to score on a Tyler Powell single to the left side, and the Bears had cut the Maplesville lead to six runs.

As soon as it looked like the Bears may have picked up a little momentum, it all fell apart in the top half of the fifth inning. Five walks, two errors and a hit batter yielded an eight-run inning for the Red Devils.

With a 16-2 lead going into the bottom of the fifth inning, the Red Devils needed just three outs to bring the game to an end on the mercy rule. Four batters later, and Maplesville could start thinking about Round 3 of the playoffs.

MHS will next play St. Luke’s, who defeated its Round 2 opponent Fruitdale in two straight games, 10-0 and 12-0.

Friday got the start on the mound for Billingsley in Game 1 and pitched four innings while surrendering five earned runs on seven hits and four walks while striking out five.
