The new Maplesville Utilities Board office is now open for business.

Employees moved from the former office in Maplesville Town Hall to the new space, located next to the public library on Main Street, about three weeks ago.

The new office measures nearly 1,500 square feet and adjoins a warehouse at the rear of the building that serves as a maintenance and storage garage for utility trucks and equipment.

The office affords employees more space they desperately needed to file paperwork and conduct board meetings the second Monday of every month.

It also gives customers more room to walk in and pay their utility bills or to discuss personal matters with employees in a private office, if necessary.

“We have room that when the customers come in and have to wait in line, they have somewhere to wait,” Utilities Board Clerk Linda Smitherman said. “We’re really proud of it. I think for the whole town, it’s good.”

The town has announced plans to remodel offices in town hall, including the former utilities office.

Smitherman said the board’s transition from the old office to the new office “went smoothly” and did not interrupt daily operations such as sending bills out.

The new office has a box to the left of the front door that customers can use to drop off utilities payments after business hours.

It also has a separate bathroom that serves as a “mudroom” for workers can use after working outside in messy conditions, and a kitchenette in the back allows employees to store and prepare food during their lunch breaks.

Smitherman said board members congregating in the office for monthly meetings are much less cramped in the new space.

“We’ve been pleased with it so far,” Smitherman said. “We’re happy with it.”
