Commission receives update from airport

Hayes said if the commission went ahead and allowed the Airport Authority to have the three buildings torn down which include the exhibition hall, a restroom facility and concrete “pig barn,” that it would leave the Kiwanis Club with a lot to bring together for the 2014 fair.

“I just don’t think it is right to leave the fair organizers out in the cold,” Hayes said.

Cleckler said no one wanted to see the fair be left without a place to hold the event but the runway protection zones were put in place for valid reasons.

“It is a safety issue and I can’t stress the importance of having these obstructions removed,” Cleckler said.

Commissioner Joe Headley made the motion to turn the three buildings over to the airport authority to demolish.

Commissioner Greg Moore seconded the motion.

Hayes voted against the motion with everyone else voting in favor.

Commissioners also approved Welch to be the commission’s hospital board liaison.

Caton said that former commissioner Tim Mims served as the commission’s hospital board liason and would report any developments made by the hospital board to the commission.

Mims passed away in November 2013 and Caton said someone needed to fill the position.
