Three teams eliminated on tournament’s second day

Night 2 of the Chilton County Basketball Tournament saw three more teams—Maplesville’s junior varsity boys and varsity girls, along with Isabella’s varsity boys—eliminated from the event.
Despite slow starts by both teams, the third-seeded Isabella varsity girls team got the better end of a 31-24 final against the sixth-seeded Maplesville Red Devils.
Four points by Caley Booth was enough to give the Mustangs an early 4-2 lead at the end of the first period.
Booth continued to lead the way for Isabella in the second period, putting up six more points and giving the Mustangs a 12-6 halftime lead.
Isabella’s Caley Booth, despite the defense of Thorsby’s Kelsea Trice (32), scored a game-high 14 points in a county tournament win on Tuesday.
Six points by Sophia Underwood in the third period aided in the Mustangs extending their lead to 20-12 heading into the final period.
Despite outscoring the Mustangs 12-11 in the fourth period, the Red Devils came up short of the win as Isabella will advance to Round 2.
Booth led the Mustangs with 14 points, seven rebounds, two steals and three blocks.
Kendrauna Griffin posted 10 points, two rebounds and three steals for the Devils.
In varsity boys action, the No. 3 seed Thorsby Rebels jumped on the No. 6 seed Isabella Mustangs early and never looked back as they cruised to a 51-17 win, punching their ticket to the tournament’s second round.
Eight points by Cameron Castleberry and forced turnovers by the Rebels’ defense resulted in an 11-4 first-period lead.
Castleberry continued to light up the scoreboard for the Rebels, ending the first half with 16 points as Thorsby held a 26-13 halftime lead.
A 22-0 third period for the Rebels sealed the fate of the Mustangs as the Rebels pulled their starters and cruised through the final period on their way to the win.
Castleberry led the way for Thorsby with 16 points, five rebounds and five steals.
Jacob Carroll had four points, seven rebounds and five steals for IHS.
The No. 4 seed Verbena JV boys won a closely-contested battle against No. 5 seed Maplesville, 34-28.
The tournament will resume on Thursday with Verbena (No. 4 seed) taking on Jemison (1) in JV action at 4:30 p.m., to be followed by Chilton County’s varsity girls (4) against Jemison (1) at 6 p.m., and Maplesville’s varsity boys (5) taking on Jemison (1) at 7:30.
All games are being played at Jemison’s Alton Cobb Gymnasium.
