Volleyball teams advance to super regional playoff round

Three local volleyball teams advanced on the first day of area tournaments, while another local team that is a postseason fixture failed to move on.

In the Class 1A, Area 5 tournament at Billingsley, Maplesville defeated Autaugaville 3-0 (25-19, 25-23, 29-27) to advance to the championship game against Billingsley.

Kendrauna Griffen led the Red Devils with seven kills, five assists and three aces.

Ally Patterson had five kills and three assists, Julia Jones had four kills, Tayuna Watson had three kills and Shelby Weldon had two kills and two assists.

Since the top two teams in each area tournament qualify for the super regional round, Maplesville and Billingsley faced each other knowing they were both moving on.

The Bears won the area championship match, 3-1 (22-25, 25-12, 25-21, 25-16).

Griffen posted five kills and two aces; Weldon had three kills, three assists and two aces; and both Patterson and Lacee Wallace had two kills.

Thorsby also advanced to the super regional round by finishing second in the Class 3A, Area 5 tournament.

The Rebels defeated B.B. Comer 3-1 (25-18, 25-14, 20-25, 25-23) before falling to Trinity Presbyterian 3-0 (25-14, 25-16, 25-12) in the championship match.

In the two matches combined, Jennifer Spivey paced the Rebels with 10 kills and nine aces.

Sabrina Ellison tallied seven kills and five aces, Keela Lucas had 21 assists and three aces, and Katelyn Beam had three kills and three aces.

Isabella, meanwhile, which has made several postseason runs all the way to the Elite 8 in recent years, failed to finish in the top two in its area tournament.

The Mustangs fell to Prattville Christian 3-1 (19-25, 25-21, 25-16, 25-18).

Unique Robinson had 11 kills and seven blocks, Kacie Adams had seven kills, four blocks and 15 assists; Erika Brascome had nine kills; Caley Booth had six digs and two aces; Yesenia Lopez had four assists and six digs; Sarah Graham had three kills and five digs; and Landy Griffith had eight kills.
