Three local volleyball teams advanced on the first day of area tournaments, while another local team that is a postseason fixture failed to move on.
In the Class 1A, Area 5 tournament at Billingsley, Maplesville defeated Autaugaville 3-0 (25-19, 25-23, 29-27) to advance to the championship game against Billingsley.
Kendrauna Griffen led the Red Devils with seven kills, five assists and three aces.
Ally Patterson had five kills and three assists, Julia Jones had four kills, Tayuna Watson had three kills and Shelby Weldon had two kills and two assists.
Since the top two teams in each area tournament qualify for the super regional round, Maplesville and Billingsley faced each other knowing they were both moving on.

Griffen posted five kills and two aces; Weldon had three kills, three assists and two aces; and both Patterson and Lacee Wallace had two kills.
