The Jemison City Council voted Monday to allow three residents to file a petition before the city for a commercial development authority.

Chris Millard, Joey Gillespie and Glenn McGriff signed a petition requesting the city to incorporate a commercial development authority for the city of Jemison.

The committee formed would promote trade and commerce by inducing commercial enterprises to locate new facilities within the city.

The petition says that the development would promote the public good and general welfare, trade commerce, industry and employment opportunities within the city and the main office of the corporation would be located at Jemison City Hall.

Millard read the petition on Monday and asked the council to adopt a resolution authorizing the signatures to proceed to form the authority by filing for a certificate of incorporation.

Mayor Eddie Reed told the council that the process of forming the committee would take a few weeks.

“It won’t be accomplished overnight,” Reed said. “This is something we have been working on for some time now in attracting new businesses for our city.”

The council unanimously voted to allow the committee to file the petition for a commercial development authority.

Councilman George Brasher was absent from Monday’s meeting.

In other news, the council:

•Approved a motion to move Kathy Tatum’s pay from $10.50 per hour to $12.50 per hour.

•Approved a motion for a water adjustment for Jennifer People according to a city ordinance.
