The Oct. 11 matchup of Lions and Tigers between Briarwood Christian and Chilton County was a one sided affair, as Briarwood took a 22-0 win.

After receiving the opening kickoff, Briarwood took four plays to score when Luke Cunningham broke a run for 41 yards and a score. The two-point try from Walker Lott to Brayden Housel was good, and the Lions led 8-0 with 10:22 left in the first quarter.

Chilton County appeared unfazed, as the Tigers took the kickoff and drove to the BCS 42 before a fumble on a bad exchange fell into the hands of Briarwood’s Ethan Simmons, who returned it all the way to the Chilton County 12.

Four plays later, Briarwood scored when Lott hit Housel from two yards out. Jonathan McGehee’s extra point was good, and the Lions led 15-0.

The game took on the shape of a defensive struggle, as neither team could mount much offense, with Briarwood forcing the Tigers to punt, and Cade Hatch picking off a Lott pass.

The defensive struggle continued until Lott broke a 49-yard run on fourth down to score. McGehee tacked on another extra point, and the Lions extended the lead to 22 with 5:48 left in the half.

It would be all of the scoring for the game, as Briarwood was able to capture the 22-0 win.

“Defense did a nice job,” said BCS head coach Fred Yancey. “We shut down a pretty good passing team. Tonight our DB’s in particular stuck with some good receivers.”

Coach Donnie Hand said his team would work on execution in the week ahead.

“Neither team really showed up tonight, offense or defense,” he said. “We’re having a tough time moving the ball on offense, so our defense has to stay on the field the whole time. We’ve still got a chance to make the playoffs, we just have to finish. We’re just going to have to go to work Monday.”
