Man shot, then arrested, in domestic incidentBy Staff Reports Published 9:34pm Wednesday, September 4, 2013
A Clanton man was arrested and charged with domestic violence after an incident that resulted with him being shot by his wife.
Stephen Joseph Mims was arrested at Shelby Baptist Hospital on Aug. 31 after being treated for a gunshot wound, according to Clanton Police.
Clanton Police Officers responded to a call of a person being shot in the leg at a residence in the 1600 Block of 11th Street.
Officers were initially told Mims shot himself while cleaning a gun, but an investigation on the scene determined he had assaulted his wife and pointed a shotgun at her, according to a CPD press release.
Mims’ wife then retrieved a gun she owned and shot him in the leg.
Mims was treated on the scene for the wound by Clanton Fire Department and then transported to the hospital for further treatment. The injury was non-life threatening.
CPD detectives continue to investigate and have yet to determine if any additional charges will be filed. Investigators think alcohol was a factor in the incident, Police Chief Brian Stilwell said.
“This could have been a tragic situation with the mixture of alcohol and guns,” Stilwell said in the release.
