Clanton man killed in wreck near Thorsby (updated)

A Clanton man was killed in a single-vehicle wreck Sunday night near Thorsby.

Jorge Chaves, 20, was killed when the 2007 Nissan Maxima he was driving left the roadway, struck a ditch and overturned, according to an Alabama State Troopers press release.

The wreck occurred at 9:35 p.m. Sunday on Chilton County Road 37, about three miles outside of Thorsby.

Chaves was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle, according to the release.

No more information was released. State Troopers continue to investigate the wreck.

The death was one of four reported by Alabama State Troopers during the Fourth of July holiday period, from 12:01 a.m. July 4 until midnight Sunday, according to a release.

Troopers investigated 434 wrecks, resulting in 154 injuries and the four deaths.

The other deadly wrecks were in Lee, Montgomery and Randolph counties.

During the holiday period, Troopers issued 2,126 citations for speeding and 607 citations for seat belt/child restraint violations, made 59 DUI arrests and assisted 299 motorists, according to the release.
